Swinney Mourvèdre 2024

Swinney Mourvèdre is a Frankland River red from bush vines planted in the early 2000s.

Four consecutive vintages in, the variety has stopped being an experiment here. Purity and distinction at this level are rare in Australian Mourvèdre, and Rob Mann puts it down to something about the site nobody can copy. The vines are dry-grown, on rich gravelly loam at the Wilsons Pool vineyard, and the fruit is picked only when flavour and tannin ripen together, then sorted berry by berry and gravity-fed to a single stainless steel fermenter. Whole bunches came in at 18 per cent, enough to underline the ferrous, finely structured, wild-spiced character Mann chases. Eleven days on skins, then 11 months in fine-grained large-format French oak.

Aromatic and savoury: dark plum, dried flowers, iron and pepper, with fine tannin and a long saline finish. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Good with slow-roasted lamb, a mushroom and barley braise, or hard sheep's cheese.
