Swinney Mourvèdre Rosé 2023

Swinney Mourvèdre Rosé is a dry, food-oriented rosé from the Powderbark vineyard in Frankland River.

Following the inaugural release put some pressure on Rob Mann, given that Erin Larkin called it one of Australia's greatest rosés, Huon Hooke a super-serious rosé of character and intent, and Decanter a wine of complexity and restraint. The 2023 blend is 86 per cent Mourvèdre, 10 per cent Grenache and four per cent Vermentino, mostly off dry-grown bush vines on the ironstone gravel hilltop. Fruit was picked on the cusp of full maturity, at 12.5 to 13 per cent potential alcohol. An ultra-light Champagne press cycle followed, then three months on lees in neutral French oak. The cool season shows in the freshness underpinning the added weight and savoury detail.

There is a lot of wine in the glass here: strawberry, rose water, citrus pith and a mineral, saline base, with finesse and grip. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. It shines with food, so try grilled fish, roast pork or a Provençal vegetable tart, and it rewards a little bottle age.
