Swinney Syrah 2024

Swinney Syrah is a Frankland River Shiraz from Wilsons Pool and 30-year-old Powderbark vines.

Already a Western Australian benchmark, the wine comes off selected trellised parcels in Wilsons Pool and from three-decade-old vines at Powderbark, planted to clone 470, Waldron and Jack Mann's heritage mass selection. Shade cloth over the afternoon side of the canopy softens the light, cools the bunch zone and preserves freshness and typicity. Hand-sorted berries dropped by gravity into small wooden vessels and stainless steel tanks, with 22 per cent whole bunch holding freshness while framing the fruit. Eleven days on skins, then 600-litre fine-grained demi-muids. This is the only wine in the range to see new oak, and only eight per cent of it in 2024.

Measured fruit intensity against long, sinewy tannin and compelling energy, since Rob Mann wants wines with spine that make you hungry. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with a bloody steak, lamb ribs or roast mushrooms.
