TarraWarra Estate Syrah 2024

TarraWarra Estate Syrah is a silky, cool-climate red grown on the hillside vineyards of a Yarra Valley estate founded in 1983.

Set on a 400-hectare property near Yarra Glen, the estate was established by Marc and Eva Besen and today combines about 24 hectares of vines with a nature reserve, restaurant and art museum. The fruit for this Syrah comes from vines high on the hill, where cool nights help keep freshness and savoury detail. The grapes were hand-picked in mid-March and destemmed into open fermenters, with around 10 per cent whole bunches added for complexity. The wine was then matured for eight months in French oak puncheons and barriques, with only a small portion new. The estate's range also takes in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Barbera and Nebbiolo.

A gentle style with fine tannins, it suits grilled lamb cutlets, pork and fennel sausages or a vegetable tagine. Serve it at 15 to 17 degrees; there's no need to decant.
