Description
Te Mata Estate Gamay Noir is the Beaujolais grape grown in Hawke's Bay, made light and fresh.
Gamay is the grape of Beaujolais, where it gives low-tannin, high-acid reds built for drinking cool and young, and it is rare in New Zealand. Hawke's Bay on the east coast of the North Island is the country's oldest wine region and warm enough for Bordeaux varieties, so Gamay is a deliberate change of pace. Te Mata was founded in 1896 and is the oldest continuously operating winery in New Zealand, run by the Buck family since 1974. The wine is fermented with whole bunches and bottled early with little or no oak.
Serve cool at 13 to 14 degrees, even lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled salmon.
