Terroir al Límit Priorat Arbossar 2019

Arbossar is a single-site Priorat from a steep 1.6-hectare parcel of century-old Carignan on north-facing slopes at Torroja.

Terroir al Límit classifies this as Vi de Coster, its equivalent of a premier cru. The vineyard lies close to the village of Torroja, where the cellars are based, on schist and granite soils, and it was planted against conventional local wisdom on the cooler northern aspect. Dominik Huber bought the site in 2005 and much of his early understanding of Priorat terroir came from working it. Luis Gutiérrez describes the wine as always fresher and more floral than the corresponding Dits del Terra from the south-facing slopes, and it is picked earlier. The two are made in the same manner: whole-bunch vinification with wild yeasts and sixteen months of élevage, but where Dits del Terra sees some wood, Arbossar is raised exclusively in concrete, which keeps the aromatics intact and the tannins fine rather than broad. It is a restrained, high-toned reading of an appellation better known for power.

Give it five years and expect fifteen or more; decant if opened young. Serve with roast lamb, game birds or aged sheep's cheese at 16-18°C.
