Description
Terroir al Límit Les Manyes is a Grenache from the highest vineyard in Priorat, at 800 metres in the Montsant ranges.
Les Manyes is the estate's Vi d'Altura, its grand cru equivalent, and at 1.4 hectares it is small even by Priorat standards. The site is cool and north-facing, and the vines are now around fifty-five years old. Where the neighbouring Les Tosses is Carignan on pure llicorella slate, Les Manyes is predominantly clay with quartz and limestone, and is planted almost entirely to Grenache. Dominik Huber has since established that the vines are Garnatxa Peluda, a mutation of Grenache Noir with smaller, thicker-skinned berries, higher acidity and lower alcohol, which goes some way to explaining the wine's unusual poise. Fermentation uses one hundred per cent whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, and since 2016 the wine has had no contact with wood at all. The result runs against Priorat's blockbuster reputation, offering intensity and transparency rather than weight.
Best given a few years and drunk across the following fifteen, with roast lamb, duck or wild mushrooms. Serve at 16°C.
