Terroir Sense Fronteres Montsant Guix Vermell Negre 2018

Terroir Sense Fronteres Montsant Guix Vermell Negre is a Garnacha grown at 800 metres in the Montsant ranges, a few hundred metres from Priorat's Les Manyes.

In 2015 Dominik Huber bought the Les Manyes vineyard in Priorat's north-western Escaladei canton, and with it an adjacent four-hectare parcel of Garnacha that falls inside DO Montsant. Called Els Montalts, it sits at a remarkable 800 metres of altitude on terroir that is all but identical to its famous neighbour. Les Manyes made its name with a Garnacha that is the antithesis of Priorat's blockbuster image, intense but built on finesse and transparency, and this wine is cut from the same cloth. Guix Vermell takes its name from the local term for the red clay and gypsum soils of the site, planted to Garnacha some 75 years ago. Only the finest selection of fruit is used, giving between 1,200 and 1,600 bottles a year. It was whole-bunch fermented in Italian terracotta amphorae for seven to ten days, pressed lightly, returned to the same vessels for six months, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Open now with air or cellar it for a decade; it suits roast lamb, grilled mushrooms and hard sheep's cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
