Description
Terroir Sense Fronteres Guix Vermell Negre is a biodynamic Garnacha from an 800-metre parcel of red clay and gypsum in Montsant.
When Dominik Huber bought the Les Manyes vineyard in Priorat's Escaladei canton in 2015, the purchase included an adjacent four-hectare parcel of Garnacha that falls under DO Montsant rather than Priorat. That site, Els Montalts, lies a few hundred metres from Les Manyes at around 800 metres, high in the Montsant ranges, and the terroir is close to identical. The name Guix Vermell refers to the local red clay and gypsum soils. The vines were planted some seventy-five years ago and are farmed biodynamically, with Tatjana Peceric and Huber selecting only the best fruit to make between 1,000 and 1,600 bottles a vintage. Whole bunches ferment in Italian terracotta amphorae for seven to ten days, after which the wine is lightly pressed, returned to the same vessels for six months and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The style is the antithesis of blockbuster Garnacha: transparent, fine-boned and built on detail.
It drinks well now and should hold for a decade; try it with roast duck, grilled lamb cutlets or mushroom dishes. Serve at 16°C.
