Terroir Sense Fronteres Montsant Negre 2021

Terroir Sense Fronteres Montsant Negre is a whole-bunch Grenache from Capçanes, raised in tank without any wood.

Montsant surrounds Priorat and grows much the same varieties on generally lower, less punishing ground, with Grenache as its mainstay. Terroir Sense Fronteres, the Montsant venture of Huber and Peceric, draws this wine from mature bush vines around Capçanes, averaging about twenty-five years of age. They sit at 350 metres across varied exposures on the mixed sandy clay soils known locally as panal, which drain freely and keep vine vigour in check. The fruit was fermented entirely whole bunch in tank, and the fermentation was deliberately gentle and short, running only seven or eight days, so extraction stays moderate and the stems contribute lift rather than grip. The wine then rested six months in tank, again with no wood at any stage, and was bottled unfiltered. It is a Grenache made for drinking rather than for structure.

At its best over the next five years; serve at 16°C with grilled lamb cutlets, romesco vegetables or a mild chorizo.
