Description
Vèrtebra de la Figuera is pure old-vine Garnacha from three high plots in the village of La Figuera, whole-bunch fermented and raised in concrete.
La Figuera sits in the comarca of Priorat near the old slate-mining villages of El Lloar and El Molar, but its wines fall under DO Montsant rather than DOQ Priorat. The vineyards are among the highest in the region at 700 to 800 metres, on the slopes of the Montsant range, and the soils here are red clay-limestone with layers of gypsum rather than the black llicorella slate of Priorat proper. Being alkaline rather than acid, they yield a Garnacha that local growers call Garnatxa Fina for its elegance and freshness. The oldest vines in this cuvée are eighty years old and the average is around sixty. Terroir Sense Fronteres fermented the fruit entirely with whole bunches, raised it in concrete and bottled it without filtration.
Structured but fresh, and it will develop over five to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, rabbit or a dish of roasted red peppers.
