Teutonic Borgo Pass Vineyard Pinot Meunier 2022

Teutonic Borgo Pass Vineyard Pinot Meunier is an Oregon red from own-rooted vines planted in 1985.

The vineyard lies at Monroe, in the southern Willamette Valley between Eugene and Salem, where Mark Debose and Jan O'Banion put in the Pinot Meunier in 1985 on a 17-hectare property carrying Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon already. Around 40 per cent of the plantings on the property have passed their fortieth year, every one of them own-rooted. The soils are Bellpine, iron-rich and free-draining, at 140 metres, dry-farmed and organically managed. Fruit was hand-picked, sorted, destemmed and fermented in open-top vessels on a pied de cuve started in the vineyard, punched down daily for four weeks, then pressed to old barrels.

Brambly and spicy, with dark raspberry, black pepper and a wild, foresty edge; Meunier keeps it light on its feet. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. Barnaby Tuttle made it with game in mind, so pheasant first, then rabbit or roast partridge.
