The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Blanc 2021

The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Blanc is a long-aged dry white from Alsace clones at Sisters Vineyard in Oregon.

David Lett believed he had planted Pinot Blanc in 1965; UC Davis had actually sent Melon de Bourgogne, a mix-up common enough at the time. Genuine Alsatian clones only arrived in the early 1990s, planted across three blocks at Sisters, the estate's lowest site. Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris were already there, and this addition completed the trio the vineyard is named for. Fruit is hand-picked, destemmed, pressed and sent to small stainless steel tanks, then given three to four times the lees ageing most of the region allows, with full malolactic and 11 months before bottling. Jason Lett says the long lees contact pulls richness in while releasing fruity esters back out of the yeast hulls over the later summer months.

Full and fresh at once, at modest alcohol: white peach, quince, almond and a creamy, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It goes with grilled fish, roast pork, or a bowl of mussels in cider.
