The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020

The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris is a textural Oregon white from America's first commercial Pinot Gris plantings.

David Lett put the vines in during 1965, at the same time as his Pinot Noir, and the variety has since spread to the Roland Green, Sisters and Daphne vineyards alongside those original rows. The approach is deliberately slow: lees ageing up to four times longer than more commercial producers allow, and no blocking of malolactic. The 2020 season was low-yielding but high in quality, giving fruit dense enough that Jason Lett ranks it with the great 1988 and 1998 vintages. Fruit was picked by hand, destemmed, pressed, then fermented in stainless steel tank, then left 11 months on lees before bottling.

Layered and generous: citrus, white flowers, sweet spice and a wisp of smoke, with linear acid running through ripe fruit and a toasty richness. Long, too. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. Good with roast pork, crab, or a pumpkin and sage tart.
