The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Meunier 2018

The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Meunier is an Oregon red from the first Meunier vines planted in the Willamette Valley.

Plantings sit across the highest and lowest of the estate's five sites. Daphne is on a hill crest at 260 metres, one of the oldest and highest-sitting vineyards in the Dundee Hills AVA, with shallow soils, less than ten inches over volcanic bedrock, and enough wind and cool to keep the vines small and the fruit concentrated. Sisters, planted in 1989, is the youngest site at 67 metres, south-facing, on more sedimentary ground. Hand-picked fruit was destemmed and fermented naturally in vessels that range from one-tonne bins up to five-tonne wooden cuves, hand-plunged twice daily, lightly pressed and aged 22 months in mostly old oak, under ten per cent new.

Forest berry, blue flowers and a wet-stone edge lead into a dense core of blue fruit, cut by snappy acid and saline savour, the tannins plump and settled. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, with roast pork, duck rillettes or grilled mushrooms.
