The Eyrie Vineyards The Eyrie Pinot Noir comes off the Willamette Valley's original Pinot Noir plantings.

The vines went in during 1965, and the site is also home to the hawks that gave the estate its name: an eyrie is a bird of prey's nest, and one appears on every label. The seven-acre vineyard holds three clones, Wadenswil, Pommard and Upright, all own-rooted and planted between 1965 and 1974, on a south-facing slope that rolls east to west and rises to 125 metres. Farming is organic and regenerative, aimed at keeping the soil life that supports vines this old. It is one of five identically made bottlings tracing the Dundee Hills from 67 metres up to 260. Destemmed, naturally fermented in 11-hectolitre open-tops, hand-plunged twice daily, then 23 months in barrique and foudre, 12 per cent new.

Deep and classical, with red and black cherry, dried rose, tea leaf and forest floor, carried on fine tannin and long acid. Serve at 15 degrees, decanted. Match it with roast duck, mushroom pithivier or a Sunday roast chicken.
