The Eyrie Vineyards Trifolium 2020

The Eyrie Vineyards Trifolium is a Dundee Hills red, from Oregon's Willamette Valley, blending all three red varieties grown on the estate.

Rain at flowering in 2020 cut yields by 60 per cent across the property, so Jason Lett made one wine out of all his reds instead of several. He rates the quality among the best he has seen: density and concentration beyond anything in his experience, including 1988 and 1998, and because the summer stayed cool the natural acidity came in close to ideal with modest alcohol. What that means in the bottle is the estate's best Pinot Noir fruit, material that would normally go into the flagship single-vineyard wines, joined by Meunier and Trousseau. The blend is 77 per cent Pinot Noir, 15 Trousseau and eight Meunier, hand-picked, destemmed, fermented across a range of vessels with twice-daily hand plunging, then 28 months in wood, 17 per cent new.

Dense but lifted, with dark cherry, pomegranate, iron and a peppery, floral edge from the Trousseau and Meunier. The long ageing in wood shows as polish, not oak. Serve at 15 degrees. Good with roast lamb, duck, or a mushroom and chestnut pie.
