The Eyrie Vineyards Trousseau 2019

The Eyrie Vineyards Trousseau is a light, savoury red from the first Trousseau Noir planted in Oregon's Willamette Valley.

Jason Lett planted it in 2012, inspired by wines he had tasted from Montigny-les-Arsures in the Jura, choosing the 20-acre Sisters Vineyard for the job. Directly south-facing, at 67 metres, it is the lowest and youngest site in the Eyrie fold, named for the Pinot sisters and planted to seven varieties. Fruit was picked by hand, destemmed, then left to ferment naturally in small 11-hectolitre open-top vessels, hand-plunged twice daily and pressed lightly. Ageing ran 10 months in old oak puncheons, with no new wood at all, to keep the delicate fruit intact, and bottling was unfined and unfiltered with only moderate sulphur.

Pale in colour and light in body, with cranberry, blood orange, white pepper and a dry, earthy finish. Chill it slightly, 13 to 14 degrees, and it sings. Try it with charcuterie, roast chicken or a Comté and ham tart.
