The Eyrie Vineyards Trousseau 2021

The Eyrie Vineyards Trousseau is a pale, spicy Oregon red from vines planted in 2012 at Sisters Vineyard.

Sisters is the lowest and youngest of the five estate sites, 20 acres facing due south at 67 metres, named after the Pinot sisters and planted to seven varieties. The Jura, and Montigny-les-Arsures in particular, is where the idea came from: Jason Lett had tasted enough of those wines to want Trousseau in the Willamette Valley, and put in the region's first. Fruit came in by hand, was destemmed, and fermented naturally in small 11-hectolitre open-tops, hand-plunged twice daily and pressed gently. Only seasoned wood was used across the 10 months of ageing, protecting the variety's delicacy, and the wine went to bottle unfined and unfiltered with moderate sulphur.

Translucent and lively: redcurrant, pomegranate, dried herb and a peppery, slightly gamey finish, with tannin barely there. Serve cool, at 13 to 14 degrees. Good with cured meats, roast pork, or a lentil salad with goat's cheese.
