Thelema Merlot 2021

Thelema Merlot is a smooth, generous red from a high-altitude estate in the Stellenbosch hills.

Set on the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Thelema was a run-down orchard when the Webb family bought it and began planting vines. Decades on, it is one of South Africa's most consistent producers of Bordeaux varieties. Merlot is grown here on cool, high slopes of the Simonsberg that let the fruit ripen fully without losing shape. The result is a supple wine led by ripe red cherry and plum, with a polished, fine-grained texture and a long, graceful finish.

Best at around 16 to 18 degrees. Its softer tannins make it an easy match for pork belly, duck, mushroom pasta or a midweek lamb roast, and it can be enjoyed now or over the next five or so years.
