Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Clos Devant Le Jeu 2023

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Clos Devant Le Jeu is a dry Chenin Blanc from a single walled parcel on the schist slopes of Savennières.

Savennières covers only a small stretch of steep slope on the right bank of the Loire west of Angers, where Chenin Blanc is planted on dark schist and sandstone with patches of volcanic rock. The soils are shallow and poor, yields are naturally low, and the wines are dry, firm and long-lived. Thibaud Boudignon has assembled his holdings here parcel by parcel, farming organically with ploughing in place of chemical weeding and a great deal of hand work in the vineyard. Each site is vinified separately: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation with the yeasts that come in on the fruit, and a long ageing on fine lees in barrel before bottling dry.

A tightly built dry Chenin for the cellar, good now with lobster or roast veal if decanted; serve at around 12 degrees.
