Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Franc de Pied 2022

Thibaud Boudignon Savennières Franc de Pied is a dry Chenin Blanc from ungrafted, closely planted vines within the Clos de la Hutte.

Franc de pied means the vines grow on their own roots rather than on American rootstock, a rarity since phylloxera and only possible where soil and site allow it. These ungrafted, close-planted vines sit inside the Clos de la Hutte in Savennières, on the schist and sandstone slopes above the Loire that give the appellation its thin soils and small crops. Thibaud Boudignon farms organically here, ploughing and working the rows by hand, with close spacing that forces the roots down and keeps yields tiny. The wine is pressed in whole bunches, fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised on fine lees in barrel before an unfiltered dry bottling.

A rare and intense dry Chenin best given time and a decanter, then served with lobster or aged hard cheese at around 13 degrees.
