Description

Thierry Germain Saumur Blanc l'Insolite is a dry Chenin Blanc from densely planted limestone parcels near the town of Saumur, with vines up to ninety years old.

Saumur Blanc covers the tuffeau country on the left bank of the Loire around the town, where Chenin grows on clay and limestone shot through with sandstone and flint. Thierry Germain's Domaine des Roches Neuves farms organically, and the fruit for l'Insolite traditionally comes from two densely planted lieux-dits, Les Cerpes and Saint-Vincent, close to the town, with fruit from several other limestone sites in the commune added in recent years. The bunches are pressed slowly and the juice ferments naturally in 1,200-litre Stockinger ovals and 600-litre casks bought from Alphonse Mellot. The wine then rests twelve months on fine lees, building texture without picking up oak flavour. Germain thinks of it as the Loire's answer to German Riesling, which is where the name — meaning unusual — comes from.

Attractive on release and capable of ten years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a fresh goat's cheese.
