Description
Les Roches is Thierry Germain's Saumur-Champigny made entirely from Cabernet Franc grown on a friend's vineyard at Chaintres de Varrains.
Saumur-Champigny sits on the left bank of the Loire near Saumur, on limestone tuffeau, and is the appellation where Cabernet Franc reaches its most perfumed and juicy expression. Thierry Germain, at Roches Neuves, farms organically and is among the leading names of the region. Frost severely damaged the vines that supply his domaine Saumur-Champigny in 2015, and the same happened in a series of later seasons, so this bottling comes from a twenty-five-year-old vineyard belonging to a friend, close to the domaine, to make up some of the missing quantity. The winemaking is identical to the domaine cuvée: hand harvesting, a cold soak infusion on some parcels, and wild-yeast fermentation and élevage in tank, so there is no oak to get in the way of the fruit.
Juicy and energetic on release and good for five years; serve lightly cool at 16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled vegetables.
