Thierry Germain Saumur-Champigny Les Roches is a négociant bottling made from fruit grown by the domaine’s own employees on vineyards they own themselves.

Saumur-Champigny is the Loire’s benchmark appellation for Cabernet Franc, worked on tuffeau limestone along the river east of Saumur. Thierry Germain, of Domaine des Roches Neuves, has encouraged and supported his employees to buy their own vineyards and farm them organically, and he then buys their harvest to make this wine. The sites carry a little more chalk than those behind the estate’s own Saumur-Champigny, though the two wines are close in style and hard to tell apart. Winemaking is identical to the domaine bottling and the emphasis falls squarely on fruit purity, drinkability and freshness rather than extraction or oak, with the fruit organically grown throughout. Expect violets and red fruit, a juicy, pepper-tinged palate, silky tannins and a long finish.

Drink now and over the next five years, and do not serve it too cold. Serve at 15-16°C with charcuterie, grilled pork or roast beetroot and goat’s cheese.
