Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz 2023

Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz is a three-parcel Hunter Valley Shiraz from the Kiss, Sweetwater Ridge and Dam Block vineyards.

Kiss contributes 45 per cent of the 2023, Sweetwater Ridge 36 and Dam Block 19, which has not featured since 2018. That block lies just across the dam from the old-vine Kiss Shiraz and shares its dark blue fruit, savoury texture and al dente tannin, with a slightly more extroverted streak. Sweetwater Ridge at Belford, planted in 1998 on red-brown loam over limestone and facing east, adds perfumed lift. The Kiss vines, planted in 1969 at Pokolbin Estate opposite Graveyard, yield very little. Components aged separately in newer French hogsheads before blending.

Dark blue fruit, licorice and earth, with the tannin firm and chewy in the Hunter manner and oak spice woven through. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted. Good with barbecued beef ribs, lamb with rosemary, or a mushroom and lentil pie.
