Description
Thomas Wines Fordwich Hill Semillon is a Hunter Valley Semillon grown on a single volcanic-soil block.
Semillon picked early, fermented cool in tank, bottled young, low in alcohol and built to last decades: that is the Hunter template, and this is a single-vineyard version of it. The block lies on the western fringe of the Lower Hunter, in a slightly drier pocket, on deep red volcanic soil with ironstone running through it. Andrew Thomas favours lighter soils for Semillon, so this is the outlier in his range, and he lets the fruit hang longer here. A few weeks on lees after fermentation is the only concession to texture.
Bright and clean, lime and grapefruit with a stony core and more weight in the middle than the alcohol suggests. Serve cold, 9 degrees. Pair it with steamed mussels, chicken and lemon, or keep a few bottles back for ten years and wait for the toast.
