Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz 2024

Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz is the final release of a single-vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz from Pokolbin Estate.

This is the end of the line. Ninety per cent of the Pokolbin Estate vines behind this wine have been cleared by land developers, so the 2024 is the last release from a site planted in 1969. Cuttings were taken before the bulldozers arrived, and they may yet be replanted somewhere. The fruit came off early in February, cold-soaked for a day and fermented on skins for nine, then matured sixteen months in hogsheads with a fifth new oak, followed by eleven months resting in Andrew Thomas's cellar. Losses like this one are becoming common on the Hunter's edges.

Concentrated and savoury, dark-fruited with spice and iron, the tannins long and quietly firm. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees from a decanter. A standing rib roast or slow-braised oxtail deserves it, and so does a long stay in the cellar.
