Thomas Wines Sweetwater Ridge Shiraz 2023

Thomas Wines Sweetwater Ridge Shiraz is a Hunter Valley Shiraz grown on old vines at the end of Sweetwater Road.

At the far end of Sweetwater Road, in the Belford part of the Lower Hunter, a steep east-facing block planted in 1998 supplies this wine. Limestone under red-brown loam, and one of the earlier sites to ripen even in a late year like 2023, with hand-picking on 21 February. The berries were destemmed but left whole, cold-soaked for a day, then fermented slowly on skins for eleven days before pressing to French hogsheads ranging from new to three years old. Thirteen months later Andrew Thomas chose the best barrels for this blend, sent a few to his Elenay Shiraz, and bottled in June 2024.

Perfumed and juicy, with red plum, blue fruit and spice over velvety tannin. Sixteen degrees, decanted if you have time. It suits duck breast, lamb ragu or a hard sheep's milk cheese, and will hold comfortably for a decade.
