Thomas Wines Synergy Shiraz 2023

Thomas Wines Synergy Shiraz is a Hunter Valley Shiraz built around old-vine fruit from Fordwich Hill.

Fordwich Hill provides the core of the 2023, joined by declassified parcels from Cote D'Or, Vanessa Vale and Black Cluster, all old-vine sites Andrew Thomas has been buying from for years. Each was cold-soaked for a day or two, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then matured fifteen months in 300-litre hogsheads. Alcohol sits at 13.6 per cent. The Hunter has never needed weight to make serious Shiraz, and this bottling is a good demonstration: concentration and detail at medium body, with tannin that supports without gripping.

Blue fruit, lifted spice and a supple tannin frame, concentrated but approachable straight away. Serve at 16 degrees. Lamb backstrap, duck sausages or a mushroom and barley pilaf will all suit, and a light chill does it no harm in summer.
