Thomas Wines The O.C. Semillon 2022

Thomas Wines The O.C. Semillon is a single-vineyard dry Semillon from Oakey Creek in Pokolbin.

Oakey Creek sits on a narrow strip of sandy loam along the road it takes its name from, in Pokolbin, planted in 1976. For years Andrew Thomas made a ripe, generous Semillon here before deciding the ground was better suited to the classic Hunter style, picked early and low in alcohol, and he has not gone back. Yields are tiny, around three tonnes to the acre, and in 2022 the allotted rows gave just over four tonnes all up. Fermentation was in stainless steel with no oak, and the wine was bottled young.

Taut and linear, lemon and green citrus with a steely mineral thread and bracing acidity. Serve cold, 8 to 9 degrees. Oysters with nothing on them, or crumbed flathead with lemon; cellar it a decade and it becomes something else entirely.
