Thomas Wines The O.C. Semillon 2023

Thomas Wines The O.C. Semillon is an unoaked Hunter Valley Semillon from one low-yielding Pokolbin block.

Southern-central Pokolbin, a shallow strip of sandy loam, vines in the ground since 1976: the site is small and stubbornly light-cropping. Andrew Thomas spent years coaxing a riper style from it before recognising the dirt wanted the other thing entirely, which is early picking, low alcohol, tank fermentation and no oak. Of all his Semillons he considers this the purest and most precise, the one with the longest line of acidity. The Hunter template is unforgiving of shortcuts, since there is no barrel or lees work to hide behind, and this block delivers because the fruit arrives with enough intensity to carry it.

Tangy citrus, faint green tropicals, cut grass and a steely mineral vein, with a phenolic nip on a bracing finish. Nine degrees. Pair it with grilled prawns, fish and chips or steamed clams with plenty of lemon.
