Description

Tiefenbrunner Merus Sauvignon Blanc is a dry white from Alto Adige, the alpine, German-speaking corner of northern Italy.

Alto Adige runs north from Trento to the Austrian border, a province where German is the first language of most growers and vineyards sit on steep valley sides and mountain terraces. The combination of southern sunshine and cold alpine nights suits aromatic white varieties particularly well, and Sauvignon Blanc has become one of the region's calling cards, alongside Pinot Bianco and Gewürztraminer. Tiefenbrunner farms from its base at Castel Turmhof in Entiklar, near Kurtatsch in the Adige valley, working plots at markedly different altitudes, and Merus is the house's everyday range. The wine is protected from oxygen through picking and pressing, fermented cool in stainless steel and bottled early, with no oak.

Serve well chilled, at around 9 to 10 degrees, with goat's cheese, asparagus, shellfish or a salad of summer vegetables. Drink it young.
