Description

Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Pinot Nero is a cool-climate Pinot Noir from the mountain vineyards of Alto Adige in Italy's far north.

Pinot Nero, known locally as Blauburgunder, does well at altitude here, and this wine draws on several hillside sites between about 400 and 980 metres, on soils ranging from sandy loam over porphyry to chalky dolomite. Cool nights at that height preserve fragrance and freshness. The wine is matured in a combination of barriques and large oak barrels, which adds a little texture while keeping the fruit clear. It is made by a family estate with a history going back to 1848, run from a castle winery in the village of Entiklar and regularly recognised by Italy's Gambero Rosso guide.

A gentle chill suits this wine, so aim for 14 to 16 degrees. It goes well with duck breast, roast chicken, grilled salmon, mushroom pasta or charcuterie. Drink over the next four to six years.
