Tim Smith Barossa Mataro 2023

Tim Smith Barossa Mataro is a straight Mataro (the Barossa name for Mourvèdre) and a savoury, firmer-edged option for anyone tired of Shiraz.

Mataro went into the Barossa's vineyards in the region's earliest days, mostly as a blending partner for Grenache and Shiraz. Tim has long argued it deserves to stand on its own, and he sources parcels from growers around the valley to prove the point. The label is all about Rhône grapes, made generous but fresh.

Expect dark fruit, earth and a savoury streak over firm, fine tannins. Let it breathe a little, then pour at 16–18°C with lamb shoulder, mushroom ragù, chargrilled sausages or a winter stew.
