Tokaji Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos 500mL 2018

Tokaji Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos is a sweet wine from Tokaj in north eastern Hungary, made by the Tokaj arm of the family behind Vega Sicilia.

Tokaj's aszú wines were being made a century before Sauternes and were prized at the imperial courts of Vienna and St Petersburg. The Oremus estate at Tolcsva is named after the vineyard associated with the earliest written account of the aszú method, in the 1630s, and since 1993 it has been owned by the Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia. Furmint dominates the blend, joined by small amounts of Zéta and the aromatic Sárgamuskotály. Berries affected by noble rot are picked individually, macerated in base wine for a day or two, then pressed and matured in Hungarian oak in cellars tunnelled deep into the volcanic hillside.

Best served well chilled in small measures with blue cheese, foie gras or almond based desserts.
