Tokaji Oremus Aszú 6 Puttonyos 500mL 2016

Tokaji Oremus Aszú 6 Puttonyos sits at the top of the traditional sweetness scale for the great botrytised wines of Tokaj, in north eastern Hungary.

The Oremus estate is based at Tolcsva and named after the vineyard where the aszú method is traditionally said to have been recorded for the first time, in the 1630s. Since 1993 it has been owned by the Álvarez family of Vega Sicilia, whose investment restored both the vineyards and the labyrinth of cellars cut into the volcanic rock. Making aszú is laborious work: pickers pass through the vines repeatedly, taking only berries shrivelled by noble rot, which are then macerated in base wine, pressed, and aged for years in Hungarian oak. Six puttonyos denotes the richest of the classic categories and is declared only in the finest seasons.

Serve well chilled in small glasses with blue cheese, foie gras or a rich fruit tart.
