Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 1.5L Magnum is a Yarra Valley Chardonnay from the estate's original 1995 plantings, in magnum.

Rows 35 to 55 of D Block are the source, part of the original 1995 planting and a mix of I10V3 and Gin Gin clones. Those rows give fruit with both intensity and freshness, which is why they were set aside for their own label. The grapes were crushed and pressed with full solids straight into French oak, twenty per cent new, fermented on wild yeast and left ten months on lees in barrel. The magnum format slows everything down, since a bigger bottle ages more gradually, and that suits a Chardonnay built with this much acid and structure.

Dense but racy, ripe pear, yellow jube and nectarine with nutty complexity and a clean, powdery finish. Serve at 12 degrees. A magnum wants a table: roast chicken, a whole baked fish, or a cheese course at the end of a long lunch.
