Description
Torres Altos Ibèricos Crianza is a Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa, made by the Torres family at their winery in the village of Labastida.
Best known for their wines from Penedès in Catalonia, the Torres family set up in Rioja in the mid-2000s, choosing Labastida in Rioja Alavesa, the cooler, higher part of the region. The winery, now called La Carbonera, works with Tempranillo grown on chalky slopes of clay and limestone, conditions that help the grapes hold their natural acidity. The wine's name comes from Alto Otero, the local spot where the winery stands. As a Crianza it is aged in barrel and then in bottle before release, typically around twelve months in French and American oak with only a small share of new wood, so the fruit stays in front and the oak sits in the background.
A medium-bodied, savoury red with soft tannins, this is a natural partner for roast lamb, grilled pork with paprika, chorizo, cured meats and hard cheeses. Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. It is made to drink on release and will hold comfortably for a few years.
