Description
Torres Mas La Plana is a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedès in Catalonia, and the wine that first put Spanish Cabernet on the world stage.
The Torres family has been growing and trading wine in Penedès since 1870, and in the 1960s Miguel A. Torres planted Cabernet Sauvignon on a parcel of gravelly soil at Pacs del Penedès known as Mas La Plana. The wine was released at first as Gran Coronas Black Label, and at the 1979 Wine Olympiad in Paris the 1970 bottling was placed ahead of a field that included Château Latour, a result that changed international expectations of what Spain could do with French varieties. It remains a single vineyard, single variety wine, fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels.
A classic partner for roast lamb, grilled beef or aged Manchego; serve at around 18°C, and give younger bottles time in a decanter.
