Trimbach Gewurztraminer SGN Hors Choix 2008

Trimbach Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles Hors Choix is a botrytis-affected Alsace dessert wine made only in exceptional seasons.

Sélection de Grains Nobles sits at the top of the Alsace hierarchy and demands a far higher must weight than Vendanges Tardives, with fruit picked grain by grain in successive passes through the vineyard once noble rot has taken hold. Hors Choix is Trimbach's own designation for the rarest of these lots, released after a long period in the cellars rather than sold on the vintage. The wine ferments very slowly in stainless steel and stops of its own accord, with no oak involved at any point, leaving 114 grams per litre of residual sugar. Volumes are tiny and the wine is bottled only when the family judges the season worthy.

Intensely sweet yet held together by the grape's spice and weight, it suits foie gras, Roquefort and rich fruit desserts, or a glass by itself; serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
