Trimbach Riesling Mandelberg Grand Cru 2021

Trimbach Riesling Mandelberg is a grand cru Alsace Riesling from the almond-tree hill above Mittelwihr.

Mandelberg rises gently above Mittelwihr and Beblenheim, one of the warmer and earlier-ripening grand crus of the Haut-Rhin, named for the almond trees once planted on its slope. Its soils are marl and limestone with a shallow, stony topsoil, a combination that gives Riesling both breadth and a firm mineral spine. Trimbach came late to labelling grand cru fruit, having long preferred to bottle its top sites under cuvée names, and the house treats these wines exactly as it treats the rest of the range: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation in stainless steel, no malolactic fermentation, no oak, and a long rest on fine lees. The wine carries 7.8 grams per litre of residual sugar and reads as dry.

Firm and mineral with a little flesh at its centre, it suits grilled fish, veal and mature Munster; serve at 11 to 12 degrees.
