Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino 2020

Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino is a pure Sangiovese from Castelnuovo dell'Abate, in the warm southern corner of Montalcino.

Andrea Cortonesi started the estate in the mid-1980s on a small holding near the abbey of Sant'Antimo, and it has become one of the most consistent names in the south of the zone. Stony, clay-bearing vineyards at moderate altitude catch warm air from the Orcia valley and cool off at night under Monte Amiata, so the fruit ripens fully and keeps its acidity. As the DOCG requires, it is all Sangiovese Grosso, fermented on skins for several weeks, then aged at least two years in French tonneaux and large casks before the required bottle ageing.

Full-bodied and generous: dark cherry, leather and dried herbs held by firm tannin. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 17–18°C with braised beef, game or hard sheep's cheese. It will keep for many years.
