Description
Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese on its own, grown at Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the warm southern part of the Montalcino zone.
Andrea Cortonesi took on a small holding beside the abbey of Sant'Antimo in the mid-1980s, and the place has been one of the steadier addresses in that part of the hill ever since. Vines sit at middling altitude on stony ground carrying clay. Warm air pushes up from the Orcia valley through the day while Monte Amiata pulls the temperature down after dark, so the fruit ripens fully and still holds its acidity. The DOCG allows nothing but Sangiovese Grosso: skins stay in the ferment for some weeks, then no less than two years spread across French tonneaux and bigger casks, followed by the mandatory stretch in bottle.
Weighty and savoury, with dark cherry, leather and dried herbs set behind firm tannin. Open it an hour early, pour at 17-18°C, and bring out braised beef, game or a hard sheep's milk cheese. Long cellaring is no trouble.
