Valenciso Rioja Laderas de Cabama 2019

Valenciso Rioja Laderas de Cabama is a single-vineyard Tempranillo from 40-year-old vines at Ollauri, now made in a fresher, more fruit-driven style.

Ollauri sits in the Rioja Alta, on the classic clay and limestone profile that gives the sub-region its structure and freshness. Laderas de Cabama comes from one plot there, planted entirely to Tempranillo. The bottling was originally built along the lines of Valenciso's flagship Reserva, made to spend years in barrel and bottle before release, but from the 2018 vintage the estate changed direction. The fruit is now picked a little earlier and a portion is fermented as whole berries by semi-carbonic maceration, which lifts the primary fruit and adds juiciness. No new oak is used. Fermentation takes place in cool concrete, followed by 14 months in used French oak barrels, so the wine keeps its dark berry and plum character alongside spice and tobacco-leaf notes.

Ready on release and good for five to eight years; serve at 16-18C with lamb chops, grilled beef or a mushroom and chorizo stew.
