Description
Valenciso Rioja Reserva is the estate's flagship red, a Tempranillo selection from organically farmed old vines around Haro.
Valenciso draws this wine from eighteen plots on the clay and limestone soils around Villalba, Rodezno, Briones and Ollauri, all close to the winery at Haro. They fall within what Alberto Gil and Antonio Remesal Villar have proposed as the western Sonsierra zone; Ollauri in particular is noted for its calcareous soils, altitudes reaching 600 metres and an Atlantic-influenced climate. Every vine is managed organically and cropped well below the regional limits, and the youngest fruit that makes the cut comes from sixty-year-old vines. Fermentation is natural, in cement vats, followed by nineteen months in mostly low-toast Radoux French oak barriques, with around ten per cent in low-toast Caucasus oak in recent releases, which lightens an already restrained wood influence. The wine then goes back to concrete for twenty-four months to settle, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Ready on release and capable of another ten to fifteen years; serve at 16-17°C with roast lamb, braised oxtail or an aged sheep's cheese.
