Valenciso Rioja Reserva 1.5L MAGNUM 2018

Valenciso Rioja Reserva in magnum is an organically grown, old-vine Tempranillo from the clay-limestone slopes around Ollauri.

Valenciso has been described as one of the most traditional of Rioja's modern producers, and this is the flagship. The Tempranillo is handpicked from seventeen organically managed plots across Villalba, Gimileo, Rodezno, Briones and Haro, all within five kilometres of the winery. These sites belong to what has been proposed as the Western Sonsierra zone and sit at the heart of Rioja's late nineteenth-century grower tradition. The vines used here are at least sixty years old, the soils are limestone-rich clay, and altitudes reach 600 metres, a combination that gives aromatic intensity and the structure for long ageing. Fermentation is natural in concrete vats, followed by eighteen months in mostly low-toast Radoux French oak barriques, with around ten per cent in low-toast Caucasus oak to soften the wood influence further. The wine then returns to cool concrete for a further twenty-four months, settling so clearly that it is bottled without fining or filtration.

Ready on release yet built for fifteen years or more, especially in magnum; serve with roast lamb, grilled beef or manchego at 16-18°C.
