Description
Valenciso Rioja Reserva is the estate's flagship, made from hand-picked old-vine Tempranillo across seventeen organically managed plots within five kilometres of the winery at Ollauri, here in magnum.
Valenciso is one of the most traditional of Rioja's modern producers, in the sense that it works with restraint rather than with new oak. The plots lie around Villalba, Gimileo, Rodezno, Briones and Haro on clay and limestone at altitudes up to 600 metres, in what has been proposed as the Western Sonsierra zone and what was, in the late nineteenth century, the heart of Rioja's grower-producer tradition. The Tempranillo here is no less than sixty years old. Fermentation is natural, in concrete vats, and the wine then spends eighteen months in mostly low-toast Radoux French oak barriques, with about 10% in low-toast Caucasus oak in recent vintages to soften the wood influence further. It returns to cool concrete for a further twenty-four months before release, and is bottled without fining or filtration.
Ready on release and built to run fifteen years or more, particularly in magnum. Serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, jamón and piquillo peppers, or a mushroom stew.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
