Valenciso Rioja Reserva 10 Años Después 2014

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 10 Años Después is released a decade after harvest, having spent five of those years in concrete.

Made only when the vintage suits, this unconventional Reserva comes from a selection of Valenciso's highest Tempranillo parcels at Villalba, where the vines are at least 85 years old and give concentrated fruit with the high acidity the style demands. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and then aged in a 50-hectolitre concrete tank for five years, an unusual choice that preserves colour and, in the estate's view, intensifies fruit purity and aromatic expression. It then rests 36 months in low-toast Caucasian oak, the same barrels Valenciso previously used for its Blanco, and is polished for a final year in French oak before release ten years after the harvest, hence the name. The result marries the velveteen mouthfeel of traditional Rioja with the focus and precision of this grower's house style, showing blackcurrant and pine-scented fruit, a lick of oak spice and an iodine-like depth.

Drinking beautifully now and likely to peak in another five years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, jamón or a mature Manchego.
