Valenciso Rioja Reserva 10 Años Después 2015

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 10 Años Después is an unconventional Rioja held back and released ten years after the harvest.

Valenciso works from Ollauri in Rioja Alta and keeps a deliberately small range. This wine is released only when the year suits it, and comes from a selection of the estate's highest Tempranillo parcels at Villalba, where the vines are at least eighty-five years old and give the combination of concentrated fruit and high acidity the style depends on. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts. The wine then spent five years in a fifty-hectolitre concrete tank, followed by thirty-six months in low-toast Caucasian oak, the same barrels the house previously used for its Rioja Blanco, and a final year in French oak before bottling, hence the name 10 Años Después. The extended time in concrete cost it no colour and has only intensified the purity of the fruit, so the wine combines the velvety mouthfeel of traditional Rioja with the focus of this grower's style.

It is drinking well and should reach its peak in about five years; decant before serving. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, grilled beef or aged Manchego.
